National Archaeological Museum of Naples

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples, also known as MANN, is one of the most famous and visited museums in Italy.

It’s among the oldest and most important in the world in terms of the richness and uniqueness of its heritage.
The MANN is among the oldest and most important cultural institutions in the world, due to the richness and uniqueness of its heritage and its contribution to the European cultural scene. Imposing in its architecture and collections, a protagonist of cultural life in the city, the museum is an essential stop to experience an initiatory journey into the world of antiquity.
The palace that currently houses the MANN was first a cavalry barracks and then the Palazzo dei Regi Studi or seat of the University in Bourbon times. From the end of the 18th century it was transformed into one of the first and most important museums of archaeology in Europe, thanks to the figure of Charles III of Bourbon and his enlightened cultural policy.
The king promoted the first excavations of the Vesuvian cities buried by the 79 A.D. eruption, preserving in the museum part of the incredible treasures that had come to light, and transferred to its spaces from the residences in Rome and Parma part of the rich collection inherited from his mother Elisabetta Farnese, with masterpieces still part of the collection on public display today.
