Pompeii is located south of Naples and is the most important of the cities, which were completely covered by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. The population was covered by ash despite attempts to survive. Ash and slag covered and preserved every scene exactly as it was at that time. Herculaneum is located a few kilometers north of Pompeii and was the exclusive resort of the wealthy people of Imperial Rome. It was partially excavated by a dense and compact layer of mud and ash erupted by Mount Vesuvius. The main reason to visit Paestum is the chance to see three of the best-preserved Greek temples in Italy, including the oldest and best-preserved of the Doric temples (550 B.C.).
